Amy Dowden Opens Up About Post-Mastectomy Reality: A New Chapter of Life
Amy Dowden, the Strictly Come Dancing professional from Wales, has spoken candidly about where she stands after undergoing a second mastectomy. She shared that she no longer feels emotionally connected to her body, a shift she describes as part of a transformative journey sparked by her breast cancer battle two years ago. Her cancer treatment involved chemotherapy and a mastectomy, and in November she disclosed plans for another mastectomy, noting in an Instagram post that there was no new cancer diagnosis and that she could anticipate a straightforward recovery.
During an appearance on Channel 4’s Stand Up To Cancer program, Dowden revealed that her hormone-fed cancer has pushed her into menopause. She openly discussed the painful question she faces: whether she will ever have the chance to become a mother, something she deeply desires.
Reflecting on her 2023 appearance on Stand Up To Cancer, where she appeared with a shaved head during treatment, Dowden described how far she has come since then. She recalled feeling unrecognizable at the time and acknowledged that the cancer diagnosis has changed her forever.
Now 35 and hailing from Caerphilly, Dowden said she continues to receive monthly injections on an oncology unit and recently underwent another mastectomy about five weeks ago. She emphasized that she is not emotionally attached to her body in the same way as before, but she remains proud of her progress and grateful for a renewed chance at life. She reminded listeners that a cancer diagnosis can alter a person in lasting ways, noting that she is a changed person by necessity, not choice.
Dowden had to sit out the 2023 series of Strictly Come Dancing due to treatment but later returned to the BBC One show, which is approaching its semi-finals. In the current series, she partnered with Thomas Skinner, a former Apprentice competitor and social media personality. The duo were the first couple eliminated in October.
Looking back, Dowden admits she never expected to step back onto the dance floor. She described the battle with fatigue and fear, confessing that there were moments of despair—cries she even heard herself shed in the shower. She yearned for the person she used to be, but she recognizes that she may never reclaim that exact self again.
