It’s no secret that friendships can crumble over political differences, but when it happens between two high-profile figures like Bill Maher and Jimmy Kimmel, it’s bound to make headlines. In December, McNearney shared on the We Can Do Hard Things podcast that she had severed ties with family members over their support for former President Trump. “Them voting for Trump is them not voting for my husband and me and our family,” she explained, adding that these political differences had cost her relationships.
But here’s where it gets controversial: Maher took issue with McNearney’s approach, arguing that ultimatums aren’t effective in changing minds. On his show Real Time, he stated, “Ultimatums don’t make people rethink their politics. They make them rethink you.” While Maher later apologized for his comments, he stood firm on his belief that he hadn’t done anything wrong. “We can have disagreements,” he told guest Adam Carolla, a longtime collaborator of Kimmel’s. “I’m sorry they got bent out of shape, but I don’t think I crossed a line.”
Despite his apology, Kimmel hasn’t warmed up to Maher, and the rift persists. Maher expressed frustration, saying, “My tribe is supposed to be the left, but these are the people who just can’t talk to you unless you’re exactly there.” He even went as far as to call out late-night hosts for their uniformity, claiming, “You could all exchange your monologues, and no one would notice the difference. I’m not like that. I don’t just buy into the left-wing nonsense, but I never stop mocking the right-wing nonsense either.”
Here’s the bold question: Is Maher the problem, or is he just unwilling to conform to the echo chamber of late-night comedy? He doesn’t think Kimmel is the “a--hole” in this situation, but he’s clearly hurt by the possibility that they may never speak again. “It bugs me,” Maher admitted. “Jimmy’s a great guy, and it’s a shame this had to happen.”
