The Controversial Ending Bruce Willis Couldn't Live With
In the world of Hollywood, where big-name stars often have the power to shape the fate of a film, Bruce Willis stands out as a true force to be reckoned with. But here's where it gets interesting: Willis, an icon of the 90s, had a reputation for being a bit of a handful on set, and his strong-willed nature led to some unique decisions that shaped his career.
Imagine a world where the iconic Die Hard franchise took a dark turn, leaving John McClane jobless, divorced, and penniless. That was the original vision for the third installment, Die Hard with a Vengeance. In this grim ending, McClane's life takes a nosedive, and he's left to pick up the pieces. But this wasn't the feel-good ending audiences had come to expect from the Die Hard franchise.
The original finale, directed by John McTiernan, saw the villain, Simon Gruber, played by Jeremy Irons, escape with his ill-gotten gold, leaving McClane to face the consequences. A year later, McClane tracks down Gruber, and in a bizarre twist, they engage in a game of Russian roulette with a rocket launcher. It's a scene that sounds more like a bad joke than a Hollywood blockbuster.
Willis, sensing the potential disaster, fought for a reshoot. He knew that the original ending wouldn't sit well with fans. And he was right; the audience didn't want to see their hero so defeated.
"We reshot the ending because it just wasn't a Die Hard ending. When they said 'One Year Later,' it wouldn't satisfy the audience. You never want to see that," Willis explained.
And so, the ending was changed, and Willis got his way. But the question remains: was it the right decision? The alternate ending, though available online, didn't quite match the expectations set by the Die Hard franchise.
So, what do you think? Was Willis right to demand a reshoot, or did he miss an opportunity for a more daring conclusion? Let us know in the comments; we'd love to hear your thoughts on this controversial chapter in Hollywood history.
