Cheshire East faces a dilemma: how to manage waste disposal without endangering residents. The recent closure of three tips has led to a surge in traffic and lengthy queues at the remaining sites, especially during weekdays. This has caused major traffic hazards, a concern residents voiced as early as September 2024.
The current booking system, implemented in August 2024, allows access to the household waste recycling centres (HWRCs) only on weekends. However, residents are now skirting the system by visiting tips at the start of the week, resulting in dangerous congestion. The council has admitted that queues often spill onto public highways, posing a significant risk, especially at the Macclesfield and Crewe sites.
The situation is controversial. While the closures were deemed necessary, the subsequent traffic issues were predicted by residents. Poynton town councillor Laurence Clarke highlighted increased traffic and queues outside Macclesfield tip as early as the closure decision meeting. Social media reports further corroborated these concerns.
But here's where it gets intriguing: the council, despite being warned, is only now addressing the issue. On Thursday, the environment and communities committee will decide on modifications to the booking system to improve safety and reduce congestion. This raises questions: Could this issue have been avoided with earlier action? How can the council balance waste management and resident safety? Share your thoughts in the comments!
