Derek Gee-West's Journey: From Legal Battles to Giro d'Italia Dreams

Canadian champion Derek Gee-West is finally looking ahead to his 2026 season with Lidl-Trek, a season that promises exciting challenges, particularly at the Giro d'Italia. But before he could focus on the road ahead, Gee-West had to navigate a turbulent period marked by an 'incredibly stressful' departure from Israel-Premier Tech and a looming $30 million lawsuit.
The Shadow of the Lawsuit
After months of silence, Gee-West can now breathe a sigh of relief. He confirmed the resolution of the legal case during a video call with the media from the Lidl-Trek team camp. The details of his departure from Israel-Premier Tech, however, remain a sensitive topic, one that could have potentially derailed his career.
But here's where it gets controversial... In an interview with El País, Gee-West revealed the immense pressure he faced. "These past months have been incredibly stressful," he admitted. "This case has been a constant headache, a process in which I've experienced some truly dark days, with moments when I thought that, unfortunately, retirement was a very real possibility, especially given the enormous sum of money involved." Former team owner Sylvan Adams attempted to sue Gee-West for a reported €30 million in damages after the rider terminated his contract due to the team's association with the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
A Contractual Dispute
Gee-West and his attorney, Branco Martins, argued that his contract was that of a self-employed freelancer, not a salaried employee, thus allowing him to break the agreement. This detail is crucial because it significantly altered the legal standing of his departure.
And this is the part most people miss... Gee-West's primary motivation was never financial. "What worried me most was making it clear at all times that money was never my motivation," he stated. He didn't want to use the situation in Gaza as an excuse to leave his contract.
Giro d'Italia Ambitions
With the legal issues behind him, Gee-West is now fully focused on the Giro d'Italia. His near-podium finish in 2025, where he placed fourth, has fueled his determination. He'll kick off his season at the Volta ao Algarve in February, followed by races like the Volta a Catalunya, Tour of the Alps, and the Giro.
"I really love the Giro," Gee-West said. "Even since I was a kid, it's been my favorite of the Grand Tours. And obviously I had the breakout race there in 2023, but if I did [the Giro] every year for the rest of my career, I'd be happy with that."
Team Dynamics and Competition
The Lidl-Trek team has been strengthened by the arrival of Juan Ayuso, who will be the team's leader for the Tour de France. Gee-West will co-lead the Giro d'Italia alongside Giulio Ciccone and sprinter Jonathan Milan. Gee-West believes that he doesn't need a team of six riders around him to compete in GC.
The Road Ahead
Gee-West acknowledges the level of competition, especially with Jonas Vingegaard also targeting the Giro. He is realistic about his chances, stating, "There's a lot of levels of rider between me and [Grand Tour winners Vingegaard and Tadej Pogačar]. It's just one step at a time, trying to improve, trying to reach that next level."
He sees Lidl-Trek as the 'gold standard' for support and knows that reaching the Grand Tour podium will be a process. Having turned professional relatively late, at 25, Gee-West believes there's still much room for improvement.
