The statue's campaign gained momentum around 2010 when Detroit's mayor, Dave Bing, was tagged in a tweet comparing RoboCop to the iconic boxer Rocky Balboa. While Bing initially denied the idea, the community embraced it, crowdfunding the project through a Kickstarter campaign. James Campbell, a generous donor to the original Kickstarter campaign, expressed his excitement, stating, 'I own this. Do you guys know that?'
