A baby deer trapped behind a fence at NSA Panama City sparks public outcry
BAY COUNTY, Fla. — Residents of Panama City Beach have been watching a young fawn for weeks as it zips along the Naval Support Activity Panama City wire. The fence belongs to the military installation, and locals say the fawn’s mother roams on the far side.
“I first noticed the mother on the other side, near the base, with a tiny fawn pressing against the fence, trying to reach each other. That image is what drew attention,” shared Naomi Phillips, a local resident.
Concerned observers contacted the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) for assistance. Wildlife officers inspected the scene with a licensed rehabilitator and FWC biologists.
following their assessment, they concluded the fawn appeared old enough to be on its own. “After evaluating the deer with our investigator, a licensed rehabber, and our biologists, it was deemed self-sufficient and capable of surviving independently,” explained Chris Boley, FWC Northwest Region Public Information Officer.
The team walked the entire length of the fence and found no gaps or holes. They suspect the fawn may have slipped through an open gate that has since been closed.
NSA Panama City staff became involved on Wednesday. “They arrived to check on the fawn, hoping to corral and relocate it away from the civilian side,” Phillips said.
Until relocation is possible, wildlife officials urge people to leave the young animal undisturbed and avoid feeding it.
“Feeding wildlife can backfire by diminishing their natural fear of humans, potentially leading to aggression or the need for humane intervention,” Boley cautioned.
Neighbors admit it’s tempting to help. “The fawn isn’t thriving or growing properly, and I worry it isn’t getting enough nutrition or water. Lately I’ve left out water and a small amount of deer corn to prevent it from dying before my eyes,” Phillips admitted.
Locals hope a safe relocation away from busy Navy Boulevard traffic can be arranged soon.
