Madison Keys begins her title defense at the Australian Open with a shaky performance.
An anxious Madison Keys faced an uphill battle as she kicked off her attempt to defend her Australian Open championship. She fell behind early, losing the first four games, but managed to find her rhythm just in time to secure a spot in the next round.
The ninth-seeded American, visibly tense on the iconic Rod Laver Arena, eventually steadied herself and triumphed over Ukraine's Oleksandra Oliynykova with a score of 7-6 (8), 6-1.
Last year, Keys made headlines when she remarkably defeated Aryna Sabalenka in a thrilling three-set match, claiming her first Grand Slam title at the age of 29. However, her journey in 2025 didn’t meet expectations, as she didn’t add any titles to her name for the remainder of the year. She began this season with disappointing quarter-final losses in both Brisbane and Adelaide, and she openly expressed her nerves about being the defending champion prior to the tournament.
"I've been thinking about this moment for basically a year," Keys reflected on her return to the center court. "I’m so happy to be back in Melbourne. Obviously, I was very nervous at the start."
