At the age of 29, HBO actress Marisa Abela has made a remarkable announcement: she is currently in remission from thyroid cancer. However, this does not mean her journey towards health is over. In a revealing interview with The Sunday Times, published on January 3, Abela discussed her ongoing battle with the disease that she was diagnosed with back in 2020.
"I’m all in the clear now, thank God," she expressed, yet emphasized the importance of her continued medical regimen. Due to the nature of her condition, she explained, "I don’t have a working thyroid, so these pills sort of create one for me. I’m committed to keeping my follow-up appointments because the thyroid plays a crucial role in regulating hormones, and as a woman, maintaining hormonal balance is vital for my well-being."
Marisa's journey began at the tender age of 23, when a doctor noticed a lump on her neck after she had been experiencing unusual fatigue. This discovery led to an intense eight-hour surgery to remove the tumor, followed by treatment involving radioactive iodine to ensure all cancerous cells were eliminated.
Reflecting on her experience in a previous interview with The Times of London in October 2024, Abela candidly shared her fears about the impact of her diagnosis on her acting career. She vividly recalled looking in the mirror after her surgery and feeling a wave of despair, thinking, "That’s it, my career is over," as she faced the reality of her heavily bandaged and scarred neck, which could easily define any character she might portray in the future.
Abela's experience also led her to a profound realization about trust in her own body. "There’s a distrust within your body that I really wouldn’t wish on anyone," she revealed. "This thing existed inside me for years without me knowing it was there — and that has fundamentally altered my relationship with my body."
While she does not subscribe to the belief that everything happens for a reason, she acknowledges that such experiences can offer valuable perspective on what truly matters in life. "You gain a clearer understanding of what is significant and what isn’t," she noted thoughtfully.
In her professional life, Abela stars as Yasmin Kara-Hanani in the critically acclaimed series "Industry," which follows the cutthroat world of recent graduates vying for positions at a prestigious investment bank in London. Fans can look forward to the premiere of Season 4 of "Industry" on HBO, set for January 11, showcasing not only her talent but also her resilience in the face of personal challenges.
