Heads up, drivers! Major road closures are coming to the N3, and it's crucial to know the details to avoid a traffic nightmare. The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) has announced significant temporary closures on the N3 Eastbound and Westbound carriageways, specifically at the M7 Pinetown off-ramp and the St James Avenue off-ramp, respectively. These closures are part of a vital upgrade to the N3, designed to improve traffic flow and enhance safety along this busy route.
According to Jason Lowe, KwaZulu-Natal Geometrics Specialist Engineer at SANRAL, the closures are necessary to install bridge beams on the Langford Road bridge. This is a key part of the N3 road upgrade project, which stretches between the Westville Viaduct and the Paradise Valley Interchange.
Here's the lowdown on when these closures will take place, so you can plan your route accordingly:
- Closure 1: Fast and middle lane closures on both East and Westbound carriageways from 11 am to 2 pm on Saturday, December 6. The slow lanes will remain open.
- Closure 2: Full closure of the Eastbound carriageway from 8 pm on Saturday, December 6, to 5 am on Sunday, December 7. Traffic will be diverted via the M7 interchange off-ramp to the M7 South, M13 East/West, or M19 North during this period.
- Closure 3: Fast and middle lane closures on both East and Westbound carriageways from 11 am to 2 pm on Sunday, December 7. Slow lanes will remain open.
- Closure 4: Full closure of both carriageways from 8 pm on Sunday, December 7, to 5 am on Monday, December 8. Eastbound traffic will be diverted via the M7 interchange off-ramp, while Westbound traffic should divert via the N2 at EB Cloete (Spaghetti junction) or at St James Avenue interchange (Pavilion off-ramp).
- Closure 5: Fast and middle lane closures on both East and Westbound carriageways from 11 am to 2 pm on Monday, December 8. Slow lanes will remain open.
- Closure 6: Full closure of the Westbound carriageway from 8 pm on Monday, December 8, to 5 am on Tuesday, December 9. Westbound traffic should divert via the N2 at EB Cloete or at St James Avenue interchange (Pavilion off-ramp).
These closures are all about ensuring safety for both drivers and the construction crews working on the upgrade. SANRAL is urging truck and heavy vehicle operators to consider postponing their trips or finding alternative staging areas during these times. Public transport services are also being asked to inform their drivers about the route changes.
"SANRAL apologises for the inconvenience of these closures and appeals to road users to note and comply with the advance warning signs and speed restrictions when travelling through the construction work zones," said Lowe, emphasizing the agency's commitment to safety and minimizing disruption.
But here's where it gets controversial... Road closures, while necessary for improvements, can be a major source of frustration. What do you think about the timing of these closures?
