A heartwarming nativity scene, with a unique twist, has captured the attention of Cambridgeshire, and it's a story that deserves to be told! The true meaning of Christmas comes alive in an unexpected way.
At a visitor farm and zoo, a special nativity play was performed, but this wasn't your typical production. The stars of the show? The farm's zoo animals and their dedicated staff! With a creative approach, they aimed to remind everyone of the real spirit of Christmas.
Andy Johnson, a fourth-generation farmer and owner of Johnsons of Old Hurst, took on the role of producer and narrator. He wanted to ensure that people remembered the religious significance of Christmas, beyond the gifts and Santa Claus.
The cast included Kat Choppin, a zookeeper who was five months pregnant, playing the part of Joseph. Her unique skill? Training the donkey that she led during the nativity. Lucy Leeder, as Mary, rode the donkey to ensure a smooth performance, preventing any unexpected 'bolting' that might send Joseph on an unplanned flight!
The event raised nearly £2,000 for St Peter's Church in the village, with Canon Fred Kilner expressing his delight. He emphasized that the funds would ensure the church remained open for all.
But here's where it gets controversial... Andy Johnson, known for his unconventional farming practices (including keeping crocodiles!), operated a telehandler to lift the Angel Gabriel high into the air. A bold move, indeed!
The single performance attracted an estimated 400 people, with the Somersham Town Band adding a musical touch, playing Christmas carols throughout the nativity.
And this is the part most people miss... Johnsons has a history of hosting diverse events, from traveling circuses to Christmas markets. Mr. Johnson's willingness to try new things is inspiring, and he's considering bringing back the nativity play next year!
Mr. Kilner, the rural Dean of St Ives, currently supports the Christian ministry at St Peter's Church. He expressed his gratitude for Andy Johnson's generous support.
