Hexham Unveils a Game-Changing Sports Hub
A new era of community sports engagement is dawning in Hexham! A state-of-the-art sports facility, aptly named 'The PlayZone,' has just opened its doors, promising to revolutionize how locals stay active. But here's the twist: it's not just any ordinary sports center.
The PlayZone boasts a versatile, all-weather playing surface, enclosed by fencing and illuminated by floodlights, creating a secure and accessible space for year-round recreation. Imagine never having to worry about the weather canceling your game again! This innovative facility is strategically located adjacent to the Priory School on Corbridge Road, ensuring easy access for both students and residents.
And this is where community collaboration shines. Northumberland County Council, in close partnership with local residents, has brought this vision to life. The council has been instrumental in developing and delivering similar PlayZones across the county, and this one will be jointly managed by Hexham Priory School and Hexham Town Council.
Booking inquiries and community involvement are welcomed by the Priory School office, reachable at 01434 506021. This Hexham PlayZone is the eighth in the county, joining its counterparts in Alnwick, Amble, Ashington, Bedlington, West Wylam, Newbiggin, and Choppington.
Now, here's the part that makes it all possible: The PlayZone program is generously funded by the Premier League, The FA, the Government's Football Foundation, Northumberland County Council, and local community contributions. These investments transform outdoor spaces into vibrant hubs, encouraging residents of all ages to embrace a healthier, more active lifestyle.
Northumberland County Council's substantial contribution of over £67k to the £269k Hexham project underscores their commitment to community well-being. Councillor Wendy Pattison, cabinet member for Culture, Leisure and Tourism, enthusiastically shared:
We're thrilled to see PlayZones popping up across Northumberland, bringing people together and fostering an active lifestyle. These hubs are more than just sports facilities; they're social gathering spots, promoting mental and physical wellness.
Hexham Town Councillor Suzanne Fairless-Aitken echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the PlayZone's versatility:
Whether it's football, netball, basketball, or fitness, the PlayZone accommodates a wide range of activities. It's a true community asset, particularly for those in the east end of Hexham.
Head Teacher Louise Burns of Hexham Priory expressed gratitude for the support, recognizing the facility's impact on both the school and the broader community.
But here's where it gets controversial: Is this just another sports center, or a catalyst for community transformation? The debate is open! What do you think? Share your thoughts on how this facility might impact Hexham's social fabric and health.
