Get ready for a theatrical event that’s as unexpected as it is exciting: Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally are reuniting on stage—this time as husband and wife in the world premiere of Iceboy! at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre. But here’s where it gets even more intriguing: the musical isn’t just a love story—it’s a wildly imaginative tale about how Eugene O'Neill supposedly wrote The Iceman Cometh. And this is the part most people miss: it’s also a hilarious satire featuring a Broadway star, a 40,000-year-old Neanderthal, and a whole lot of spotlight-stealing drama.
Set to run from June 9 to July 16, 2026, in the Albert Theatre, Iceboy! is the brainchild of the creative minds behind Urinetown and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Directed by Marc Bruni (The Great Gatsby, Beautiful), the musical promises to be a bold, boundary-pushing experience. Offerman, known for his roles in Parks and Recreation and Her, will play Eugene O'Neill, while Mullally, his real-life wife, takes on the role of Vera Vimm, a Broadway star whose life is upended when she adopts an ancient Neanderthal who becomes an overnight sensation.
But here’s the controversial twist: the show doesn’t just play with history—it completely reimagines it. With music by Mark Hollman (Urinetown), lyrics by Hollman and Jay Reiss (Spelling Bee), and a book by Erin Quinn Purcell and Reiss, Iceboy! blends comedy, satire, and a dash of absurdity. Mullally and Offerman, no strangers to Chicago’s theater scene, joked in a joint statement, ‘We are thoroughly excited to bring the heat of our marriage back to Chicago, the city where we both cut our theatrical teeth many years ago. Although we were hoping to mount a Tennessee Williams title, city officials reminded us that Chicago has developed an historical aversion to catching on fire, so we’ve agreed to this considerably less spicy but hilarious new musical called Iceboy!’
This isn’t just a show—it’s a conversation starter. Is it okay to bend history for the sake of humor? Can a Neanderthal really steal the spotlight from a Broadway star? And most importantly, will Iceboy! live up to the hype? One thing’s for sure: with Offerman and Mullally leading the charge, this is one premiere you won’t want to miss.
