Tennis fans were left stunned as top players Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek withdrew from the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships at the last minute. But should they face harsher penalties for doing so?
Tournament director Salah Tahlak thinks so. He has proposed a controversial idea: deducting ranking points from players who make late withdrawals. This comes after Sabalenka and Swiatek, the world's top two, pulled out of the Dubai event, citing a hip injury and a need for a schedule change, respectively.
The timing of their decisions raised eyebrows, especially since Sabalenka had recently signed a sponsorship deal with Dubai's Emirates. Tahlak believes that the threat of losing ranking points could deter players from withdrawing from major tournaments at the eleventh hour.
But here's where it gets controversial: Is this proposal fair to the players?
According to the WTA rulebook, withdrawing from a mandatory tournament already has consequences, including fines and a 'zero-pointer' in rankings. Players claiming injuries must see a tournament doctor, while schedule changes are allowed three times per season without a fine.
Tahlak argues that fines aren't effective, using Serena Williams' $100,000 fine as an example, which he claims is insignificant compared to her earnings. He suggests docking players 500 or 1000 points for last-minute withdrawals, a move that would undoubtedly grab players' attention.
However, not everyone agrees. World No. 5 Coco Gauff believes that players already face a mandatory schedule and that deducting ranking points would be unfair. She highlights the issue of burnout and the increasing demands on players, especially with the expansion of 1000-level tournaments to 12 days.
Gauff suggests an optional 1000-level tournament, similar to the men's Monte-Carlo event, to ease the burden. This proposal raises an important question: How can we balance the needs of tournaments and players?
